Power and Violence

This is the reason why violence plays an important and decisive role in the so-called Bolivarian Revolution. As part of President Chavez´ strategy, he has divided the country in a profound way and with his ardent rhetoric maintains the confrontation amongst Venezuelans: our own Berlin Wall. When the relationship between the State and society has deteriorated up to the degree that coexistence is substituted by violence, one can say with reason that we are facing a national crisis.

Authoritarian governments do not have scruples to recur to violence when it is in their best interests. Only democracy allows for peaceful changes. Therefore, to qualify the actual Venezuelan revolution as “peaceful”, while it benefits through violence to achieve certain objectives, is by all means infamous.

The permissive environment that is achieved by impunity permeates Venezuelan society with every day crime. The most recent projections of the Insituto de Convivencia and Seguridad Ciudadana indicate that the present year will close with 19.400 murders in the country. 39% of homicide cases are with fire weapons and 36% kill young people between 15 and 29 years of age.
